Responsibility for maintaining smoke alarms shifts to M2-Kodit – Installations to be completed during 2025
The amendment to the Rescue Act transfers the responsibility for installing and maintaining smoke alarms from residents to the building owner no later than January 1, 2026. Going forward, M2-Kodit will be responsible for ensuring that apartments have a sufficient number of smoke alarms.
Under the new legislation, M2-Kodit is tasked with installing smoke alarms in the apartments of its owned properties and keeping them operational. During 2025, smoke alarms will be installed in all apartments where they are still missing. This installation concerns approximately 8,000 apartments. Residents will be informed about the schedule and instructions closer to the installation date.
The installation work will be carried out by KT Paloturvapalvelut Oy.
Residents’ responsibility to report faults
Although M2-Kodit is responsible for the installation and maintenance of smoke alarms, residents are responsible for testing the functionality of the smoke alarms monthly and cleaning the devices about once a year. The Rescue Services also recommend regularly testing smoke alarms because dust and dirt can accumulate, reducing sensitivity. Residents must immediately report any faults or deficiencies to their maintenance company.
